Adapted by Sharon Newburg-Rinn, Ph.D. (Gallaudet University).
The Matson-DHH assesses social skills in deaf or hard of hearing
students. The instrument has an educational orientation and can be
used by teachers, counselors, social workers, or psychologists. In
addition to a total score, seperate scores are calculated for six
scales: Kind, Non-Irritating, Sensitive, Sociable, Non-Arrogant, and
Mature. The test can be used to determine if a particular student
needs to be taught social skills. The test also can be used as a pre-
and post-measure in the context of a social skills program. The
normative sample included 260 students attending the Model Secondary
School for the Deaf at Gallaudet University. Alpha coefficient of
internal reliability for Total Score estimated at .83. Validity data
reported in test manual.
CONCEPT:
The Matson-DHH assesses social skills in deaf or hard of hearing
students. The instrument has an educational orientation and can be
used by teachers, counselors, social workers, or psychologists. In
addition to a Total Score, separate scores are calculated for six
scales: Kind, Non-Irritating, Sensitive, Sociable, Non-Arrogant, and
Mature. The test can be used to determine if a particular student
needs special attention due to poor social skills. The test also can
be used as a pre- and post-measure in the context of a social skills
training program.
ADMINISTRATION:
This 70-item, self-report instrument can be administered individually
or to groups of several students. Sign language skills are necessary
in administering this test to students whose main mode of
communication is sign, and at least one monitor should be available
for every seven or eight students. A second grade reading level is
required. Ages: 12 - 21. Administration time: 10 - 15 minutes.
RELIABILITY:
The normative sample included 260 students attending the Model
Secondary School for the Deaf at Gallaudet University. Norms were
analyzed by race, gender, and age. Alpha coefficient of internal
reliability for Total Score estimated at .83.
VALIDITY:
Matson-DHH Total Score was found to correlate significantly with
teacher and counselor nominations of students with high social
skills. Three individual scales (Kind, Sensitive, and Mature) also
correlated significantly with positive nominations. Females were
found to score higher on the Total Score and on five of the six
individual scales, findings consistent with American cultural
expectations in which females often are seen as higher in social
skills than males.
